Public Information Week – 26 to 30 May 2008

The application for Development Permission for the airport and its supporting infrastructure was submitted on 5 May 2008. Given the importance of this project to the future of our island, and the scale of the project, we have extended the period in which people can raise issues with the planning authority, in this case the Governor-in-Council, to 16 June 2008.

In the meantime, we are doing all that we can to help people understand what the project includes and how it will affect our lives and our environment. The application documents have been placed in public buildings (including the Public Library, SHDA Office, National Trust Office, Legal & Lands and the Access Office) where all can access them. A copy has also been sent to Prince Andrew School to inform staff and pupils, and the documents have been posted on the project website (www.sainthelenaaccess.com), along with other information about the project.

For those who want to know more about the airport project and the application process, we are proposing to hold a series of meetings around the island in the week of 26 May 2008. This will also be a chance for you to view various photomontages showing what the airport, the haul road and the jetty in Rupert’s could look like from various key viewpoints on the island. The planning documents will be available for viewing and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions. We will also explain how you can raise issues more formally with the Governor-in-Council. In addition to this, we expect to have a number of leaflets and summary documents to hand out. I will be returning to St Helena for this public information week and will be joined by Nigel Kirby of DFID.

If you want to view the plans for the airport, raise issues with the project team, or just find out more about development of air access for St Helena, then come along to one of the following planned events:-

Monday 26 May, 7:00 pm – St Michael’s Church, Rupert’s Valley

Tuesday 27 May, 7:00 pm – Harford Middle School, Longwood

Wednesday 28 May, 7:00 pm – Consulate Hotel, Jamestown

Thursday 29 May, 7:00 pm – Kingshurst Community Centre, St Pauls

Friday 30 May, from 9:00 am – Outside the Canister, Jamestown (photomontages of views will be on display and members of the Access Team will be in attendance to discuss the project and answer questions)

A free bus will be arranged from various pick up points for the following meetings:

Harford Middle School, Tuesday 27th – pick up points starting from Levelwood
Consulate Hotel, Wednesday 28th – all district pick up points
Kingshurst Community Center, Thursday 29th – pick up points in Sandy Bay, Blue Hill and Half Tree Hollow

This is our island, and our airport and it’s important that we all have involvement in a development that will help to secure our future. We look forward to welcoming you.
